a healthy eating plan - cutting down on fats
Most people will know that we should be trying to cut down on the amount of total fat that we eat as part of healthy eating habits. But did you now that there are different types of fat? Too much fat of any type is bad for you but what we should be doing is replacing as much of the saturated fat as we can with unsaturated fat as part of healthy eating habits.
Here are some easy practical tips for reducing saturated fats from your diet to promote eating healthily :-
- Always choose lean meat cuts and always remove any visible fat.
- Reduce the amount of red meat you eat, choose white meat options.
- Reduce the amount of fried or roasted foods you have. Go for grilled, boiled or steamed foods.
- Balance your meals - if you have something with a high fat content, complement it with a low fat partner so that the overall meal fat content is kept low.
- Always read the food labels and select options with less total fat or less saturated fat.
- Use more vegetables in meals and less meat. Choose more types of vegetables but consider colour to keep the plate looking attractive.
- Measure cooking oil don't just poor from the bottle.
- Use low fat versions of dairy produce whenever possible.
- Reduce the amount of hard cheese - get stronger tasting varieties but use less.
It is important for our long term wellbeing that we start to think about healthy eating habits. The good thing is that it is not that hard to do and in many cases it will provide additional cost benefits.
